A Controlled Fall was probably New Zealand’s first (and last) snowboarding film shot entirely on 16mm film. Cheap digital cameras and editing systems hadn’t come of age yet so if you wanted image quality you had to find a way to use film. A Controlled Fall was shot in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand using an Aaton XTR and my trusty old wind-up Bolex. Funding an independent production through sponsorship wasn’t the only challenge – volcanic eruptions, free spirited snowboarders and erratic weather all added to the experience. Motion Pacific photographed the project, but Paul Stieglbauer at Wicked Edge made it happen.
